Where History Meets Innovation: A First Look at ME Malta
Explore the stunning ME Malta by Meliá, a Zaha Hadid-designed landmark in St. Julian’s.
The latest edition of SPACE Magazine highlights a striking new architectural jewel in the Mediterranean: ME Malta, located in the vibrant district of St. Julian’s. This 184-key hotel is more than just a place to stay—it is a confident expression of the ME brand’s approach to contemporary luxury and innovation.
A Legacy in Stone and Steel
The hotel sits within Mercury Towers, the tallest buildings in Malta. It is also one of the final projects personally approved by the legendary architect Zaha Hadid before her death in 2016.
The design creates a deliberate contrast between old and new. At the base of the towers stands the restored Mercury House, a Grade II listed limestone building from the early 20th century that once served as an important WWII communications hub. Rising above it, Hadid’s signature curves twist upward toward the sky, orienting the towers toward sweeping Mediterranean views.
Interiors Inspired by the Island
The Istanbul-based studio Autoban designed interiors that complement the bold architecture. Their approach draws inspiration from Malta’s layered landscape and natural textures, using a subtle palette that feels grounded and refined.
The Lobby
Guests enter through a ground-level lobby featuring a gilded elevator area and a sculptural centerpiece that sets the tone for the hotel’s design.
Social Spaces
Midway up the tower, a dramatic double-height lobby lounge and bar creates a cocoon-like atmosphere with panoramic sea views. A striking swimming pool with curved glass sides resembles a giant aquarium suspended above the city.
Guestrooms
The rooms feature sea-washed tones and tactile materials such as leather and bouclé. Warm brass accents add a polished finish while maintaining a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
Exceptional Amenities and Dining
ME Malta offers a range of elevated experiences distributed vertically throughout the property.
Radio Rooftop Bar
Located on the 20th floor, this signature venue offers 360-degree views, Asian-inspired sharing plates, and a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere as the sun sets.

Hidden beneath the building in the former control center of Mercury House, the spa features rugged limestone walls and an immersive cave-style pool inspired by Malta’s natural grottos.

Guests can enjoy breakfast and dinner at Luciano by Gino D’Acampo, while the Cabana Club on the eighth floor offers a lively daytime scene around the rooftop pool.
A New Urban Heart
ME Malta is designed to be more than a hotel. Together with the wider Mercury Towers development, it aims to create a new civic hub for St. Julian’s.
By combining careful restoration with bold contemporary design, the project celebrates Malta’s heritage while looking firmly toward the future. It is a hotel that understands its place within the evolving fabric of the city.
